About Perrymans Bakery

Century-old baking heritage lives on in North Adelaide without gimmicks or experimental shortcuts. Instead of rotating dozens of novelty pies, the ovens focus on time-tested classics—from chunky steak pies stuffed with prime beef cut by the butcher next door to traditional pasties washed down with tomato sauce. Devotees point to the Kitchener bun as the benchmark: dense dough, generous cream, and all the sweetness carried cleanly by the jam. Crisp almond flakes and sweet custard top the bee sting bun, while apple turnovers arrive packed heavy with fruit. Grab a double-shot latte, settle in under the umbrellas at the outdoor pavement tables, and catch the Saturday rush for loaves of cheese and onion sourdough.

  • Heritage Sweet Classics: Old-school South Australian baking shines in dense Kitchener buns balanced by tart jam, alongside custard-filled bee sting buns topped with crisp sliced almonds.
  • Butcher-Cut Savory Pies: Traditional chunky beef pies feature prime steak sourced directly from the adjacent butcher shop, baked in golden pastry.
  • Street-Side Coffee Pause: Outdoor street-side seating under umbrellas offers a relaxed neighborhood spot for morning coffee, pasties, and specialty weekend sourdough loaves.

Classic South Australian sweet pastries and baked morning treats

  • Vanilla Slice

The vanilla slice ($5.80) was good. The vanilla custard was firm but not a stiff gelatinous block of snot like many I’ve eaten in Victoria. The icing was sweet but not sickly.

  • Kitchener Buns

I’ve been getting Kitchener Buns from Perrymans since the 70’s, and they remain the best in Adelaide. Other bakeries overload their Kitcheners with sugar in the cream and on the bun, whereas Perrymans let the Jam provide all the necessary sweetness, allowing maximal enjoyment of the denser Bun texture and richness of the Cream.

  • Apple Turnover

The apple turnover ($5.70) is one of the best I’ve eaten. On picking it up, it was heavy with apple filling. The pastry was light and crispy. The cream was delicious; it wasn’t overly sweet, yet it was light and had substance.

  • Ham and Cheese Danish

I purchased a coffee and ham and cheese danish and was pleasantly surprised that the cost was not exorbitant! I was even more surprised by the quality of the coffee and food.

  • Plan for limited seating and tight entry

Outdoor tables under the umbrellas can fill up quickly during peak midday periods, and the historical narrow entrance limits indoor wheelchair accessibility.

If the display case has run out of bee sting buns, ask staff at the counter, as fresh buns are assembled on request when batches sell out.
