How can I assess an Adelaide-to-Alice Springs tour operator before booking?

I found a multi-day tour advertised online and want to check whether the itinerary and company suit me.

Read recent independent reviews for the same itinerary, then check cancellation, refund and insurance terms directly with the operator. An old forum recommendation is not enough.
