Leave the city stay until after the island if you want to return the car and walk or use transit. Avoid changing hotels every night; one mainland stop and one island base will feel calmer.

Where should we pause between Adelaide Airport and Kangaroo Island?
We will rent a car for roughly ten days in December, may spend one or two nights before the island ferry, and want a few Adelaide city days afterward.
